Chess – After School Small Group Professional Coach Lessons

Day of the Week: Monday – Friday, weekly (Each child attends one meeting per week. Meeting times are not interchangeable.)
Dates: Classes begin the week of Sept 17th. End dates vary; please see the complete class schedule in the description below. Chess club registration is for the entire school year 2018-2019.
Time: 3:00 – 4:15 PM
Eligible Grades: K – 5th grade
Fee: $340
Chess Club Webpage

Description: The after school lessons are taught by a professional chess coach in a small group setting with kids of similar skill level (USCF ranking) once a week. We are able to offer two afternoon classes every day of the week. This allows us to provide: Smaller groups of kids in each club meeting time; A tighter defined level within each group of kids, which will enable the coach to prepare lessons more focused on the specific level of each group; More differentiation, with coaches better able to focus on individual levels of experience and expertise; More fun for the kids, who will enjoy playing more against kids who are closer to them in expertise and/or grade level.

The LME Chess Committee and coaches worked together to define the best criteria for each group of kids, taking into account both ideal ranges for each instructional level and the actual number of LME chess club members currently at each level. Seats are limited for each skill level.  Priority will be given to children who meet the criteria for the day/time. Thereafter, priority will be first-come, first-served. During the year, the coach might suggest a better class for your child based on his ability or tournament result. You will be notified about the same and with parent’s permission, the child would be moved to the class that would be a better fit for his skill/level.

Class Levels For All Kids Enrolling In LME Chess Club 2018-2019
Beginners K-1 K & 1 Younger kids with limited prior experience in chess club
Beginners 1st-5th with at least one semester of chess club experience but no tournaments
Advanced Beginners Chess rating of 100-250
Intermediate 1 Chess rating of 250-500
Intermediate 2 Chess rating of 400-800
Advanced Chess rating of 800+

Note:  We intend to maintain these skill levels. However, if class sizes are unbalanced, Chess Committee may make adjustments to class groupings after registration closes and before sessions begin.

Class Schedule:
The following schedule makes the best possible use of the available coaches and meeting spaces, maximizes the number of families who can continue this year with the same day/time they chose last year, and creates significantly tighter and more focused groupings of kids into appropriate levels:

Class Schedule Class 1: 3:00PM – 4:15PM Class 2: 3:00PM – 4:15PM
Monday Beginners K-1 Advanced Beginners
Tuesday Beginners No Class
Wednesday Advanced Beginners Intermediate 1
Thursday Beginners K-1

Beginners/Advanced Beginners

Friday Intermediate 2 Advanced
  • Seats are limited for each skill level.  Priority will be given to children who meet the criteria for the day/time. Thereafter, priority will be first-come, first-served.
  • Rating cut-offs are not set in stone, but placement in a level that your child does not meet the criteria for can only be done with prior chess committee approval.
  • If we have a lot of interest from beginners for Tuesdays, then we will have a second class on Tuesdays as well.

All children who participate in the LME Chess Club will receive a year-end trophy, but only children who participate in at least one Austin-area chess tournament will be eligible for a Gold, Silver, or Bronze trophy. There are typically 2-4 chess tournaments in Austin each year. We will keep LME chess club members informed about Austin-area chess tournaments. Chess tournaments are a great way to build kids’ excitement about chess, and the LME Chess Club encourages all club members to attend at least one chess tournament every school year. Please see the chess club webpage for more information.

This fee covers the cost of 24 coached afternoon sessions (Fall & Spring sessions), Chess Club T-shirt, Chesskid.com gold membership, trophy, and Beyond School Hours Admin.

Chess Club

Time: No regular meetings. Periodic chess events dependent upon volunteer participation.

Eligible grades: K – 5th

Fees: $35, Includes Chess Club tshirt, Chesskid.com gold membership, trophy, and end-of-year Chess Club recognition ceremony

Description: Chess Club brings LME students together for chess-related enrichment, fun and team building activities, with a goal of building enthusiasm and fun surrounding chess.

The LME Chess Club encourages all club members to attend at least one Austin-area chess tournament every school year.  Chess tournaments are a great way to build kids’ excitement about chess, and participation enables kids to get an updated chess rating, which assists with grouping kids appropriately for chess-related activities.  LME Chess Club members wear their club t-shirts to tournaments and represent Laurel Mountain for team awards. Typically, there are 2-3 chess tournaments in Austin each school year, with registration fees of ~$30 for the full day tournament including awards ceremony.  Chess Club will inform members about tournament opportunities in the area, but registration is completed by families independently, at their own expense. All children who participate in one Austin-area chess tournament by the end of February will receive a trophy or medal during the Chess Club’s end of year recognition ceremony in May.

Chess Club also organizes the LME Friday Morning Chess Meet-Up, which offers all LME students the chance to play chess regularly against friends from all grade levels in a relaxed setting.  All club members are encouraged to participate in the Friday Morning Chess Meet-Up, and parents are encouraged but not required to come in with their children. These meet-ups offer a chance for parents to meet other families who are interested in chess and for children to both mentor and learn from their peers.

Additional Chess Club programming is dependent on parent volunteers from within the Chess Club.  In past years, the Chess Club has sponsored chess movie nights, brought in high-level chess players to give talks and/or play simultaneous chess against groups of kids, run chess tournaments at LME, etc.  We can only provide these types of activities if parents volunteer to organize and work on them.

If you are interested in volunteering with Chess Club, please email Siddharth Khanna or the Chess Club Committee, which is comprised of parent volunteers.

The goal is to encourage new players to observe and/or play the game with other students, (no coaching will be provided), and for experienced players to practice the game with other players. Parents are not required to stay, but their help with set up and clean up would be appreciated. Parents, siblings & youth volunteers are welcome to participate in the games and are encouraged to guide new kids to setup chess boards and teach them chess basics.

If your child has always wanted to play or is curious to learn more about the game of chess, then this is a great place to do it! We are also working on an incentive program for kids that attend the meetup on Friday mornings regularly, if we can find one or two parent volunteers to assist with the meet-up this school year.  If you are available to be present during Chess Meet-up on a semi-regular basis, please email us to let us know!

NOTE: Since this will be a free session with no fees or registration requirements, participating in the morning meet-up WILL NOT include the Chess Club T-shirt, chesskid.com membership or year end trophy, which will be provided for students joining the Chess Club (see club info above).

The registration form includes questions about the ways in which you are available to volunteer. Please be accurate about your availability so that the group your child is placed in has enough parent volunteers to avoid canceling meetings or disbanding the team.
